What exactly is Bifidobacterium?

Bifidobacterium are gram-positive and non-motile, and makes up the gut flora. The gut flora is the microorganisms that live in the digestive tract and are able to do a number of useful actions for their host cells. Bifidobacteria reside in the colon, help in the digestion of food and prevent tumor growth. Bifidobacterium can be seen in several shapes such as, spiral, rod and clustered. However, they are most commonly seen as rod-shaped.
