Bifidobacterium is a type of Probiotic. Probiotic comes from Greek expression "pro bios" which means "for life". The exact definition is "live microorganisms, indigenous to the human intestinal tract, which, when consumed in adequate amounts improve the intestinal microbial balance and positively affect the function of the human intestinal tract and general health". In simpler terms, this means that they are microorganisms that live in the human intestines and once consumed, they help our intestinal balance with microorganisms and help the intestinal tract work better. Also, it's just good for you. However, the benefits of probiotics were discovered by a man named Elie Metchnikoff who made studied human health with lactic acid bacteria. He worked at Pasteur Institute in Paris and while working there, established a theory that when lactic acid bacteria is in the intestines it can control infections caused by harmful microorgansms. It can also, control the reproduction of bacteria that produce toxins, or poisons. Bifidobacterium was actually discovered by a researched named, Henry Tissier, who also worked at Pasteur Institute. He was the one to discover Bifidobacteria when he was studying the feces of healthy, breast-fed infants. He was the first researcher to start talking about how much they help people. He figured out that when there was more Bifidobacteria than putrefactive bacteria in the intestines, the correct balance of microorganisms if back to normal. Bifidobacteria is still being researched and will become bigger when we learn more about what their capable of.
